在美說中式英語: "我們的浴室關了"
我們大學曾經與美國一所大學的學生聯歡，大家談笑甚歡，意猶未盡，便邀請美國學生到我們的宿舍玩。走到半路，其中一個美國女孩問，“Where is the bathroom？”我好不納悶，她怎么會關心我們的浴室在哪兒啊？我如實指給她看。女孩接著表達想進去。我忙告訴她，“Sorry，our bathroom is closed.我們的浴室關了”這回輪到女孩納悶地搖頭。一路說笑到了宿舍，女孩又問，“where is your bathroom？”怎么又問啊？看到我一頭霧水的樣子，女孩說，水喝多了，想去回應“call of nature”（自然的呼喚）。我這才恍然大悟。原來她想去洗手間。事后仔細查書，bathroom不僅有浴室的意思，更多時候是指洗手間。可是，在一些簡化的字典里，迄今，也只有浴室的解釋。
這則還算是笑話，另一件可就沒有這么幽默了。當時我和幾個朋友在美國拉斯維加斯一家酒店乘電梯。梯門一開，涌進三個美國大男孩。其中一位，對著我的一個女同伴，問到“Are you working?”這個剛到美國不久的女孩回答，“Yes，but I am on holiday now.是的，不過我現在假期。”三個大男孩一臉壞笑，樣子很是曖昧。搞得我們莫名其妙。同行的師姐，卻臉色陰沉，一副欲說又止的樣子。事后，她告訴我們，“Are you working？”在美國是一句招妓俚語。我們當時都以為他在問，“你在上班嗎？”真是可惡！
外語的學習，如果剝離了文化與語境，就會力效不足，鬧些笑話，出些枝杈。
